PROJECT: GOODWIN SANDS 5K

If Rat Race did 5ks…..this is it. The Goodwin Sands lie approximately 10 miles off Dover in the midst of the World’s busiest shipping lane.

Notorious for their propensity to catch mariners off-guard, these enormous sand banks are completely submerged at High Tide but at low tide they are completely exposed, creating, for a short period, the perfect Rat Race 5km. We’ll grab that window, speed you over on a fast RIB, set up a running course complete with start and finish gantry and allow you to run the World’s only underwater 5k course. And whilst it may only be 5k, you’ll not be able to dawdle, as soon enough, that tide will be coming in and lapping at your shoelaces…

If you can’t make our scheduled departure, we can run this adventure on a bespoke basis for you and your mates. A minimum of 6 people is required to run the trip. Email us to find out more.

Trip Highlights:

– The World’s only ‘underwater’ 5k running course
– Special permissions in place for this Project
– Fast RIB insertion and extraction
– Never-done-before

Saturday 25th August
Meet at Dover Harbour at (time 3pm). This gives us the maximum low-tide window to achieve our objective once the Sands are exposed above sea level. We will have a quick shore-briefing and kit check then we will board the boat that will take us to the Sands. Upon arrival at the Goodwin Sands our team will run ashore and erect gantry and simple course markers. The, you will alight and on the starting gun, you’re off. Upon crossing the finish line (possibly with soggy feet) we will beat a hasty retreat from the rising tide to end up back at Dover Harbour. For those who wish, we will go to the pub and regale tales of our derring-do over beers and food. The first round is on us!

Rat Race will provide:

  • Boat transport to and from the Goodwin Sands
  • Qualified and experienced Boat Charter Captain and crew
  • Race support staff on the Sands
  • Course markers, start/ finish gantry
  • Light refreshments for the both voyages (chocolate, crisps, water, sports drinks)
  • Hot drinks for return voyage in flasks
  • Complimentary round in the pub to celebrate!
  • Satellite tracking and GPS routing device: Rat Race will provide satellite tracking units which allow us to see where you are at all times for your safety. It also allows your loved ones and supporters to keep track of your progress along this surreal running route, should you wish to share. It will also generate an official course time for you!

You should not worry about getting lost. We will use rudimentary course markers. At all times our support team will not be far away and our boat will be on hand too.

The participant will provide:
Their own footwear, running gear, waterproofs (recommended with taped seams), day pack or bum-bag for snacks, if desired. A towel and a change of clothes for the return trip is also recommended in case of wet weather or of soggy ankles on the sands!

A full kit list will be circulated upon booking of the trip.

We have rated this challenge as Technical rating 4/10 and Endurance rating 3/10. We’ve also added a scare rating of 8/10. What does this mean?

Technical rating 4/10
This is a running challenge over a modest 5km distance, but it will be on waterlogged sand and shingle; of course you are in a very unusual environment too.

Endurance rating 3/10
It’s only 5km so if you are happy jogging that distance, you will be fine. But don’t dawdle…the tide will come in and we want to be done and dusted by then!

Scare rating 8/10
It is not unsafe. It is surreal. How many times can anyone saw they have done a 5k on a sandbar at low tide in the middle of the English Channel! Nerves are to be expected of course. Butt you’ll love it: It will be exhilarating and beyond unusual.

How far is the route? The route is as near to 5km as we can make it. The exact final route distance is subject to change and might be a little above or below these figures. Owing to the unique nature of this undertaking, we cannot be 100% specific on the route until we are standing there in the middle of the sea as the sands shift on each tide…!

How hard is it and how fit do I need to be? It’s 5km and if you can jog that, you will be fine. We do require you to run it (as opposed to walk it) however, to ensure we get you all round the distance before the tide swallows the sands for the day.

What type of terrain is it? Sand, shingle, pebbles. Could be water-logged in places. Expect your feet to get wet and sandy.

What happens when the tide comes in? We get wet! We have a window in which to complete the challenge and this window is more than sufficient to get our 5km under our belts. The tide will be coming in all the time, but we plan to be off the Sands before it comes all the way in. it is literally a race against the tide, but don’t worry – we have set out for this to be doable within the Low Tide window. We will be off in plenty of time before the Sands slip beneath the waves in their entirety.

Do I need to navigate my way along the route? No. Our staff will go out in advance of the runners and place rudimentary stick markers. Follow them and you’ll be grand!

What if I get lost? You won’t. Our satellite trackers are equipped with SOS functionality so if you do get into trouble, as well as other runners 9and our back-marker runner) being able to raise the alarm to the boat crew, we will know where you are at all times and can come and get you.

What if I get hurt? As above. We have First Aid trained staff on the boat with a medical kit, we have safety runners and we have the experienced boat crew, plus communications at all times with the Coastguard.

Where will we stay? Accommodation in Dover is up to you. We’d recommend stayng for the night before as it’s an early start.

What is included? Check out the tabs above to see what we provide on kit/ equipment and what is included as far as food/ accommodation/ transport is concerned. You can download the full trip notes file HERE.

How do I get back after the Challenge finishes? The boat will deposit you back at Dover Harbour, which is where we embark. You can leave your car here, or our crew may be able to give you a lift to the railway station or to your digs if you have come by train.
