Where is the Half Way Campsite?

Our overnight stop for Challengers will be at Tyndrum. It is 38 miles south of Kinlochleven, the location of the transition from bike to the mountain marathon run. It is considered a suitable point as you will have the majority of the cycle behind you while leaving a challenging yet reasonable test for day 2.

Tyndrum is a small but well serviced village at the southern edge of Rannoch moor. It is very popular with tourists and offers a range of accommodation and food. There is variety of fayre available to a passing trade of tourists, hillwalkers and West Highland Way walkers from establishments such as the Tyndrum Lodge hotel, the Real Food Cafe and the Green Welly Stop, one of the Highlands best known tourist stops with a licensed cafe, a newsagent and sweet shop, a Scottish gift shop, a superb whisky store, a petrol filling station. Brodie’s Minimarket offers the opportunity to top up on supplies.

About the City To Summit campsite

Rat Race will be operating the By The Way campsite exclusively for the use of City to Summit participants to book accommodation for themselves and their supporters. The campsite will denote the finish of day one and roll out point for day two. We will be running a simple café operation to provide hot evening food and breakfast supplies with beer and cider also on sale. The menu can be seen below.

There are communal areas so folk can kick back and reflect on the day’s activities and contemplate the challenge ahead. Supporters will not require camping passes to access the site but vehicles will be unable to enter unless they have purchased one of the very limited vehicle passes we have on sale. Other vehicles without a pass will be able to find parking in the village which is a short walk away. Bookings need to be made directly through Rat Race for the night of Saturday  28th July and the campsite will not be taking bookings as we will be operating the campsite according to the needs of the event and due to the compact nature of the site campers will not be permitted to pitch their own tents at our campsite for the night of Saturday 28th July.

Facilities at the campsite will include a minimum of secure bike compound, flushing toilets, heated showers, a bike mechanic operation and food to purchase. Shower rooms are located in the hostel and shower block, while the chalets have their own shower. Tunnel Tent – Up to 8 people

This season we will be using the Vango Capri 800XL AirBeam tunnel tent. It is great for larger groups who want either discreet separate sleep areas for 4 or looking for great value for up to 8 folk. This is a generous, up-to-8 man tent that utilises a vis-à-vis layout, meaning it has two bedrooms positioned at either end of the tent and a large central living area in the middle with plenty of space for kit and head clearance. The bedrooms can have the divider removed to create flexibility for different sleeping layouts. These tents have been weather and fire tested to the European standard EN5912.

The following accommodation options are available in these tents:

Male Solo Pod
Solo Pod with comfort pack in male shared tent

Female solo pod
Solo Pod with comfort pack in female shared tent

Tent-only
hire of up-to-8 person tunnel tent

Comfort pack 5cm sleep mat and brand new pillow.

Dome Tent – Up to 3 people

Our compact Dome tent option can take up to 3 people and is our most affordable option for small groups. For this season will be using the Vango Sigma+ which offers a twin flysheet door and additional porch area ideal for storing kit. As it is built to sleep three people, this tent offers a great amount of space for pairs or solos.

It has enhanced stability and superior fabrics that are waterproof and fire retardant for a dry, safe and comfortable camping experience. These tents have been weather and fire tested to the European standard EN5912.
